And she has good fruit in all areas of her life. She does apply her talk to her walk in all areas. I have known Dani Johnson for nearly 20 years now and she has had her tough times and come out better for it. If you find a second person to learn from but they’re teachings are in contrast to your belief system you need to decide if it is wise for you to follow that person’s guidance. No, I’m not saying you can never learn from other people but I am saying that you need to have a foundation, a consistent philosophy, to guide your decisions and keep you on track. Each day is guided by a different good sounding phrase and they get off track. So often I see people in our industry jumping from one “guru” to the next based on a Facebook post or some small concept that they promote. Follow them closely for a while and block out the rest of the noise. Once you found the person that has what you want in your life and meets the criteria that are important to you, then dig into what they have to say. Have they gone through some tough times and come out on the other side better for it? Is your mentor still learning and growing? Are they really only working “a few hours a week” or are they really making the money that they once did? The main thing is to see if they are still applying the principles they are teaching to their lives, in all areas.įinally, are they still growing? A good mentor has been around for a while and has made some mistakes but has learned from them and applied the new knowledge to future successes. Next, you have to look and see if they are walking their talk. Other than the fact that this is not true, what would two years of crazy hours do to your relationships, your health, your family, etc? So you have to look at the whole picture. It’s important to really look into what a mentor is all about before you dive in 100% because, while they may have some business success, they may have sacrificed their family to get it and do you really want that? For example, a mentor may say that you need to work from sun up to sun down for two years to make it our industry, after that you can relax for the rest of your life and enjoy the residual income. But you are also a risk to get taken off track in some other area of your life. This is a good thing if they have had the kind of success you are looking for. However it happens, you start following them and their advice. Maybe they are on stage at one of your company events or maybe they have a web site that you discover. It’s at this point that you may hear about this person and get curious about what they are doing to build their business. Hopefully, they stay focused on doing the things that took them up the ranks to start with and not get distracted with the recognition. This is a good test for that person to see if they are ready for the next level or not. The stars rise primarily because the companies they are working with need to attract more people so they make hero’s out of the latest top producer who moves up the ranks. What I have noticed about our industry is that the super stars come and go pretty quickly. We all have them, whether we know it or not, but purposely picking the right mentor could have a huge positive impact on your life. This advice could apply to a lot of things but I’m talking about your mentor.
